Sowerby Bridge Guestbook Archives
January 2003 - January 2006
I didn't intend archiving the old messages so soon, but spammers found the address and loads of junk leading you to Belgian sites which were mainly pornographic. So I've had to create a new guestbook.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

My paternal grandfather Alfred Edward Sunderland was born in Sowerby Bridge in about 1878. He immigrated to New Zealand in the early 20th century. I have enjoyed reading the history section on this site and also looking at the wonderful old photos. Louis was from Sowerby Bridge and a potter, though this may have been a hobby as I seem to remember something about his being a bookeepper, too. I also have photos of a fam. home on Roachdale Road. I would love to hear from anyone who's memory might be jogged by any of this. And thank you for this awesome site.

Comments: I went to school her in the late 70's early eighties and only have happy memories, but always regarded the place as a dump. Now I work in Sowerby Bridge and have done for the past Six years, the people of Sowerby Bridge are really friendly and endevour to make anyone welcome and the old place is looking better than it ever has in my lifetime with some nice shops and bars, cool resturants this place is really on the up. Lets hope it carries on.
On the downside the traffic problem was really bad, hey but since whoever decided to spend a shed load of money trying to make it better....actually made it worse. Someone a short while ago had a sense of humour and put up a sign saying Welcome to Slowerby Bridge, its a shame that its been removed because when your stuck in that bottle neck every morning you need a bit of humour...
Sorry to go on Nice Site by the way.

Comments: My husband I just visited Sowerby on honeymoon it is a most extraordinary place. It stirred feelings in me that I didn't know existed. Something about the deepest lock made my own lock of womanhood seem deeper than I ever imagined.
Oh, and the countryside is really quite beautiful. Thank you for a lovely stay Sowerby.

Comments: I am a praticularly avid fan of canals. If I'm honest, its the passion of my lifetime. I love the sublime simplicity of it all mixed with the undeniable ingenuity of the lock system. Just seeing one of these magnificant creatins of mankind makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. So to learn that Sowerby Bridge housed the deepest lock really tickled my fancy. I paid a visit just last weekend. The weather was fantastic and i discoverd that not only does Sowerby Bridge have a fantastic lock, but that it is also a brilliant little village surrounded by beautiful countryside. I will definitely be returning soon.

My late husband and I walked over it in 1984, looking for an old bridge that was in a picture his Australian family had - the remembered picture was underneath the new County Bridge! His name is Siddal McCarthy, grandfather was Siddal Hardy (who emigrated to Australia) greatgrandmother was Martha Siddal who married John Hardy, I believe both lived in Sowerby Bridge? Were there ever Siddal Mills? Any info would be wonderful. Thanks for the memories.

Comments: The romance and history of the narrow canals makes for terrific reading. I envy all you people who have access to them. Alas far away here in Australia we do not have any canals, the closest we have is channels for irrigation purposes and small creeks mostly with water in the winter months. I would like a photo of a canal with a train line alongside. Your web page is very good.. eep it up.

My grandmother's name was Eliza Chew and she spoke of visiting cousin James in Soaerby Bridge who had a housekeeper called Frances. She also went to 'on the tain' to visit cousin Hannah in Elland.
She also visited Golcar and made reference to going 'on the car' to Halifax. I presume she is referring to a tram car.
I would be intersted to hear from anybody else who has any stories from the same time.

My grandfather William Henry Walker was born in Sowerby Bridge in 1886,he lived at 9,Fountain St,15,Montague St and 32,Back Carlton St to name but a few.He had brothers,Frank and Gilbert and sisters Violet,Elsie and Nellie.I think Franks decendants still live in Sowerby or Sowerby Bridge.
If anyone knows David Alan Walker age 60 or Peter Graham Walker age 56 please tell them about this message.Their father was called Norman.
I was 15 when I left Sowerby Bridge and always wanted to go back to live but now my daughters are married and settled in Lincolnshire where I now live,it's hard to leave them and my grand-children.

Comments: This was a great trip down memory lane. It has re-kindled my lost desire to find out the liniage of my fathers true name "Thoseby". His Name is Geoffry Mitchell (born 1937) and has two full brothers John and Tony and two half brothers Lynn and Glynn. My fathers parents were Amy Thoseby (nee Mitchell) and then changed it back to Mitchell when she re-married to Mick Mitchell. She originally Married Mr Fred or Frederick Thoseby. Here lies the problem. I have two photographs of Frederick but the trail has stopped. Can anybody help. We lived on Washer lane (1966-1968) and whent to sowerby bridge school, remember throwing eggs at the school bus to Coply - Wasn't too good a few years later when on the same bus!!
Thanks for the memories.

Comments: Hi,
i was born in sowerby bridge in 1948,attended all the sowerby town schools, was a keen train spotter as most boys were in those days, after school we used to go down to the bridge at the luddenden end of dixie wood and wait for the double header, always a great high to the day,how things have changed eh! Does anyone out there remember when mallard came thro sowerby bridge september 1961,i have some pics, has anyone else got any,i would love to see them and any old faces that were around on that day.Saturday morning matinee at the roxy where i took my first girlfriend sandra holroyd i knew it was love because she squirted a squeezy lemon at me from two rows infront, its funny the things that stay in your memory isnt it. Cyril sands, where we all got our bikes from, those of us that were lucky enough. We used to walk from mill bank to ryburn school every day, there and back ,never thought anything of it,all weathers,no fancy walking boots or waterproofs, just me old duffle coat and ordinary shoes, i had a milk round job with jack greenwood of sawter house farm, every saturday morning,he paid me a tanner for half the round and a bob of i did the whole round,it took me three weeks to save up for a dinkey toy,and the first one i bought was an american chevrolet, advertised as "NEW" with windows.I took that car home and nothing else mattered, total joy.I will always remember pressing my nose up against the window of cyril sands,on my tiptoes peering into that dreamworld of little dinkeys dreaming of the next one i would be buying in another three weeks time.If you wanted your hair cut then there was really only one place to go and that was pockocs across from the roxy. Most people worked in the textile industry or on the railway,we used to be a big railway town, must not forget the cws or the coop bakery up sowerby new road and the little wooden hut just down the road where you could get sweets and stuff, does anyone remember the sweet shop at station road under the arches,we used to ask for a quarter of rum truffles and run
i never knew what that meant until a few years later,so naive. We still had gas lamps up our street and we would hang around them listening to the quiet hiss at night and just chat and laugh, you could here the whistles of the steam trains and the clanking of the wagons shunting at sowerby bridge shed, somehow it all seemed so reasuring, the winters were cold and snowy, great for us kids and the summers melted the tarmac,a nightmare for our mums. And every time i travel thro sowerby bridge to this day something always triggers off a memory....which is nice.

My father was born around this area in 1916 to George Harold and Gladys May Waddington. There was another son. Bernard. They migrated to Australia about 1924 and setteled in the town of Geelong in the State of Victoria, Australia. A daughter, Pauline was born. They later moved to Albany, Western Australia, where George and Gladys are buried.
George Waddington worked in the Woollen industry I believe before moving to Australia.
I would very much like to hear from anyone who may be related to the above Waddingtons.

Comments: Wow!! I can't believe all the info and pictures! I was amazed to find this. I've been researching my family tree and got a copy of the 1901 census report stating that my grandmother, her brother and sister and her parents lived at 6 Wharf Street, Sowerby Bridge, attended Christ Church. GGrandfather William Henry TURNER was a tailor and it states that he was an employer. He was born at Newcastle on Tyne. in 1862. His wife, Ada HOWYROYD was born in 1865 at Yorks Dewsbury, as was their son, Norman Turner and daughter Lena Turner. My grandmother, Edna Turner was born at Sowerby Bridge on March 1, 1900. They emigrated to Canada a year or two before the Titanic sank. I'm interested in learning more about them or if they had any relatives there. Even what life in Sowerby Bridge was like at that time.
P.S. My husband is asking if and when any housework is ever going to get done again???!!!!!!! LOL

Comments: I remember as a young 12 yr.old{45 yrs.ago} walking along the canal bank from Luddenden Foot to visit the Library, and taking out William books by Richmal Crompton, the Librarian at that time was a strict disciplinarian and would make you wash your hands if they were dirty.I also remember walking down Tuel Lane and going through some long kind of ginnel right by the side of the Coop ,and then down some very steep steps to the street below. Further down would be a couple of small shops and then the iron bridge over the canal, and no matter how much you jumped on it it would shake but never come down. The swimming baths were also a popular spot, the ultimate dare being to jump off the balcony into the deep end and not be caught and thrown out. Going back up Tuel Lane at the end of Industrial Road by the bend there was a small shop called Ebbs and I remember going in for sweets and a really old man and a younger lady serving behind the counter
