Greenhow Village at the side of
the common.
A terrace of four cottages, derelict for many years until the 1990's.
It appears to have started as a single large cottage (Nos 2 & 3, numbering from the left) with the doorway in No3 as this is the only one with mullions. This cottage has quoins on the wall corners and a second doorway without mullions. There is evidence inside of blocked up doorways on both floors which would connect the two together. The stairway in No2 runs across the back wall in front of some blocked up windows.
Cottage Nos 1 & 4 have been built on without mullions & quoins, the roof however, is continuous. They appear to have been connected internally at sometime in the past, see the drawings below. These drawings were made at the same time as the above photograph.
The following notes refer to the drawing below...
Ground Floor
-
Part of No2 is within the structural walls of No1.
-
The shaded area between No2 and No3 indicates a section of wall where a gap existed at one time. This has since been walled up to the full thickness of the wall.
First Floor
-
The thin shaded area between No1, No2 and No3 indicates a section of wall where a gap existed at one time. This has since been walled up to with a thin section of wall, leaving an alcove on either side.
