ANCHORAGE AREA
(and Kenny Lake)
Question: Anchorage is equidistant between Which 2 major cities?
See the bottom of the page for the answer.
We were kept busy in Anchorage, arriving on the 10th July, we had 2 concerts in different churches on the following day. Unfortunately photography of the town from a high vantage point was impossible due to the haze. The haze was created by smoke particles in the air from the forest fires further north.

This picture is looking down on Anchorage.

A couple of days later the wind changed direction and blew the haze away, but time was not available to repeat the photograph.

We travelled to Chugiac, about 20 miles north of Anchorage on the 14th, stopping at the Alaska Zoo on the way. Although this zoo is very small it was well worth the stop, even though we only had an hour to spare. You could see the polar bear swimming underwater and playing like a little child, putting his head into the barrels and kicking off the bottom to the surface.
The following day we travelled onto Kenny Lake. This was strange as it was 250 miles back the way we had come from Beaver Creek.

The church here was small originally but was enlarged 2 years ago as can be seen. My memories of Kenny Lake are: hot, sunny, mosquitos and trees for miles and miles.

Our host family at Kenny Lake lived at Copper Center, 30 miles north of the church. Close by, this very fast flowing river, grey coloured due the the glacial silt it carries, is the mecca for many fishermen. This trio had been out in a motor boat, with a guide, and had caught these King Salmon. This river is probably flowing at about 20mph and the guide was very skilled in controlling the boat, equipped with powerful outboards.
At Copper Center part of the Alaskan pipeline can be seen. This pipeline runs from the oil producing areas on the northern Alaskan coast, 800 miles down to Valdez in the south, the nearest port that is ice free all year round. The pipeline is elevated above ground to avoid damage to the permafrost, which exists even this far south. If the permafrost melts then the ground becomes unstable (being mainly glacial gravel's) and severe erosion and changing of the landscape would occur.

We travelled back to Anchorage from Kenny Lake on the Saturday and had 2 concerts on the Sunday morning at Faith Christian Community Church in Anchorage.
