The lake outside the "Chapel by the Lake"
where the choir will be singing.
This is the view from the carpark and
the altar window of the old chapel.
The Mendenhall Glacier is the horizontal
line just above the trees in the centre of the photograph.
Leaving Ketchikan the ferry heads northwards up the Tongass Narrows and across into the Clarence Strait. This is followed towards the top of Prince of Wales Island, but some 15 miles before the top the ferry turns westward up the Stikine Strait between Etolin Island and Zarembo Island and continues to the town of Wrangell, where a brief stop is made. From Wrangell the ferry heads in a westerly direction until a narrow channel is reached with leads to the Wrangell Narrows. The Captain had tried to get there for the rising tide, but a delay at Wrangell meant that we missed this and the tide was ebbing strongly as we made our way through. This channel is some 25 miles in length and a point is eventually reached where the tide flows the otherway and a "downhill" ride was made to the next stopping point at Petersburg. Sailing north from here we soon exited into a wide channel, the Frederick Sound and made our way in a northerly direction. At a little after 9.00pm the Captain informed us that some Orcas had been spotted on the starboard bow, and as we had some spare time, circled so we could observe and photograph them. They never got to be closer than a few hundred yards and the pictures were at the extreme limit of my x10 telephoto lens. As we recommenced sailing north the sun was setting. During the hours of darkness the ferry sailed up Stephens Passage arriving in Juneau at about 5.00am. After unloading the bus and the kids etc we proceeded to the "Chapel by the Lake" where the top photograph was taken at 7.00am.
Morning Devotions What a fantastic place to worship God!
African drums beating, the children leading the
praise, worship and prayers.
The occasional tourist who arrived early
got an additional treat.
Downtown Juneau - Built by Gold.
The Alsakan Gold Mines are in the woods in the lefthand photograph. The Tramway - or cable car.
Carries passengers
from the Cruise Liner jettys
to abt 1800 feet up Mt Roberts.
Restaurant, theatre gift shops
and walking trails at the top.
The Mendenhall Glacier
The glacier is retreating and large blocks of ice can be seen floating in the water.
As the ice blocks are heavily compacted they take a long time to melt.
The water here is not at freezing point as one might suspect but at abt 3 or 4 degrees.
Peter & Frank can be seen holding a piece of ice that has been wonderfully "scolloped"
by the water action
(similar to that seen in water worn limestone)
Just a pretty picture
of a house on Auke Lake
with snow covered mountains behind.
But what about the kids?
Nothing new to report, 5 concerts in Juneau before moving on th Sitka on the 28th June - more about that later.
Still having rehearsals, teaching school... life goes on.
