Yuma, La Jolla, San Diego & Upland
| Shortly after leaving Yuma,
we also left Arizona and entered California. Within a few miles we were
driving through rolling sand dunes where many a film has been shot.
Some distance further on the road climbed steeply into the Vallecito mountains that seemed to be made of just boulders stacked on top of each other. The road climbed higher, past the 1000 foot marker, 2000 foot, 3000 foot, I could feel the pressure building up in my ears, 4000 foot, until we reached the summit at 4190 feet. I expected to drop down the otherside now, but we continued driving through the mountains for another 30 miles, sometimes descending, sometimes climbing, before the final descent into fertile valleys. An hour later we arrived at our destination - La Jolla (pronounced La Hoya) just north of San Diego. The sun set that night, silhouetting the palm trees and everywhere turned orange. The following morning was hot and sunny and many of us went down to the beach for picnic and to play in the water. We had two concerts on Sunday before moving
onto Upland for our final concert before Christmas at Upland, near San
Bernardino. Thursday morning saw us departing for camp near Santa Barbara,
150 miles away.
