Wisconsin

Wisconsin - capital city Madison, situated about 80 miles west of Milwaukee. It is built on an isthmus (a strip of land separating two bodies of water) between lakes Mendota and Menona. The capital building is built in the shape of a cross with a central circular tower. This circular tower, possibly copied from that of St Paul's Cathedral in London, features on other state capital buildings including Missouri, Illinois and Washington DC.

Madison's capital building bisects Washington Avenue on the south western end of the isthmus.

It was in Wisconsin that I first encountered the "strange" road numbering system used in the US. All even numbered roads run east/west and all odd numbered ones north/south. Here's the problem; in Wisconsin, Interstate 94 runs north/south for 80 miles up the side of Lake Michigan. Imagine my confusion, Scott asks if we need to turn east or west on this road, I say, "No, we need to go north". Heading north is 94 West!!! Logical I suppose.

Crossing the state line,
the sign welcomes you, giving you the shape of the state.

In Milwaukee, underground sprinklers water the central grassy borders
and its not even that dry here.
Wherever we go, at many times the local news channel come to see and interview the choir. Sometimes the van turns up and transmits live, other times a lone cameraman arrives and films part of the concert.

New shoes! Western kids go through shoes at an alarming rate - African children are no different.

Belgium, just north of Milwaukee
This area was heavily settled by Luxembourg immigrants from 1845
