Inscriptions on Ladstone Rock
It is believed that Ladstone is the place where sacrifices were made. The word 'lad' is derived from 'llad' which means to kill or flay.
In later years it obviously became a focal point above Sowerby Bridge where probably many of the mill workers came on a Sunday afternoon to get away from the smokey, grimey town. Here they carved their names in the rock - the oldest I have found is 1841
This still carries on today, although it would now be termed "graffiti", and today's carvers lack the patience to make a good job of it.
